Vaccinations
Vaccinations are an essential part of your pets healthcare, providing them the best protection against preventable infectious diseases, many of which can be fatal.
Being a responsible pet owner means giving your pet the best start in life and this includes vaccinations. Whether it’s a primary course, a yearly booster or a re-start course Brookend can offer you a vaccination service to suit your pets needs.
Primary Vaccinations
This is the initial course of vaccines for puppies and kittens consisting of two vaccines several weeks apart. Initially immunity is transferred from the mothers milk but this starts to lessen over time and vaccinations are required to provide continued immunity.
- Kitten Course: start at 9 weeks and repeat at 12 weeks
- Puppy Course: start from 8 weeks and repeat 2-4 weeks later when 12 weeks old
- Dog vaccines protect against: distemper virus, infectious canine hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.
- Cat vaccines protect against: cat flu, enteritis and feline leukaemia virus
Booster Vaccinations
To maintain your pets protection we recommend annual boosters. A full health check is also carried out at the same time to keep your pet in great condition. At Brookend we also send vaccine reminders to help ensure that your pet never misses out on essential vaccines.
Re-Start Vaccinations
We understand that life can be busy at times and that vaccine appointments can sometimes get forgotten but this can leave your pet vulnerable to diseases. A restart course is similar to a primary course but this will top up your pets immunity again.
Kennel Cough Vaccination
Kennel cough vaccines can be given at the same time as a standard vaccination. This vaccine is sprayed up the nose rather than injected. Most dogs tolerate this very well as it is a very small amount of liquid.
Kennel cough is a respiratory infection caused by various bacteria or viruses and is easily spread from dog to dog causing a dry hacking cough that usually lasts around one to three weeks.
If your dog is mixing with multiple dogs, going into kennels or doggy daycare then kennel cough would be advisable.
Rabbit Vaccinations
Rabbits also require vaccinations to protect against Myxomatosis and Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (RVHD). This is widespread amongst wild rabbits and is spread via biting insects such as fleas, mites and mosquitoes and direct contact and from environmental contamination. Sadly ,this disease is often fatal.
You can vaccinate your pet rabbit from 5 weeks old and we recommended yearly boosters.
