Neutering

At Brookend we provide a neutering service for many species including cats, dogs, rabbits and many more. Advice is tailored to your pets' individual needs.

What is neutering?

Neutering is the term used to described the surgical procedure to remove all or part of the reproductive organs to prevent reproduction. This is an irreversible procedure which is performed under general anaesthetic. In females this is known as ‘spaying’ and ‘castration’ in males.

What are the benefits?

There are many health and behavioural benefits to neutering your pet, such as:

  • Preventing unplanned pregnancies
  • Preventing uterus (womb) infections
  • Reducing the incidence of mammary tumours
  • Preventing testicular cancers and prostate disease
  • Decreases roaming territorial behaviours and scent marking

What is the best age to neuter my pet?

There are many factors involved that can affect the age at which you neuter your pet including the type of species, breed, size and behavioural traits but our team can advise you on the most appropriate age for your pet. Following the latest scientific evidence we recommend neutering:

Cats - from 4 months of age
Dogs - Small to medium breeds (from 6 months of age)*
Dogs - Large breeds (from 12 months of age)*
Dogs - Giant breeds (from 18months of age)*
Rabbits - from 4 months of age

*We cannot spay a bitch whilst in season and advise to wait 3 months after a season has finished before spaying*

What is a cryptorchid castrate?

A cryptorchid castrate is a term used where one or more testes have not descended into the scrotum and are retained in the groin or abdominal area. A retained teste can have an increased risk of being cancerous and castration is always recommended. This is a longer surgery than a standard castrate as the teste must be located and removed.

Should I let my pet have a litter before spaying?

This is a frequently asked question, however there are no known health benefits to allowing your pet to have a litter. Pregnancy can come with complications and caring for puppies can be hard work not to mention expensive if things don’t go to plan. Breeding should always be carefully considered and researched.

Surgery

As with any surgery there are always advantages and disadvantages, which our team will happily discuss with you ensuring you are well informed, and that your pets wellbeing remains our top priority.
