Tick Treatments

What are Ticks?

Ticks are a type of blood sucking parasite. They are very small in size meaning they can be difficult to spot on your pet, but they become larger after engorging on the hosts blood after which they drop off into the environment. Animals and humans can be hosts.

What risks do they pose?

Ticks can pose a threat to both humans and pets and can spread tick-bourne diseases, that can be transmitted to their host whilst feeding.

Tick-bourne diseases include Lyme's disease which is a serious bacterial infection that can affect both humans and dogs. Babesiosis is another disease spread by ticks which affects the red blood cells, causing severe anaemia, although there is a low risk in the UK.

How to prevent ticks?

Ticks are more active between spring and summer months. They tend to be found in woodland areas and areas with higher wildlife populations. They sit on vegetation and wait for hosts to pass by that they then latch on to.

It is advisable to thoroughly check your pets after walking near long grasses or woodland areas and remove any ticks as soon as possible. You can purchase a special tick remover tool to safely remove the tick or book an appointment with a nurse to remove it for you. It is very important to remove a tick carefully and to ensure all of the mouth part is removed otherwise this can cause potential infections and skin irritations.

The good news is that most of our monthly flea treatments also kill ticks. They are not a repellent but will quickly kill them after attaching to your pet. If you are concerned about tick protection especially if travelling to a high risk area then speak to our team who will happily assist you.
